Tell us your full name, age, hometown and passion.
My name is Julie Potter, I’m 30 and I’m from Baskersfied, CA. My passions are rap/comedy/prosperity for all.
What dream are you currently living out?
The relentless pursuit of creating and living off of those creations.
Where were you before you decided that it was possible to pursue your dream?
I always knew that any dream was possible but I didn’t really accept that I could be a rapper until I moved to San Francisco in 2002. I was always rapping in one form or another, but before I started proclaiming my skills, I was going to college and trying to find a way out of Bakersfield.
Did you have an epiphany or a change in mindset when you realized that it was possible? When/what happened?
I discovered other LGBT rappers, and I was inspired. I also studied abroad in Amsterdam and got on stage for the first time as an improviser. I was forever changed.
When you committed yourself to walking that path, what changed for you?
The world conspires to make your dreams come true when you are on your path, and that is exactly what happened to me. Once I decided I was going to rap I started recording my songs, and promoting myself. I researched local recording studios and made some phone calls. I looked at what other rappers were doing to see what was working. I put together shows and asked my friends to come. I was asked to be a part of the first ever LGBT hip hop tour, and I received national media attention. I am still benefiting from being a part of that tour.
However, the greatest changes came from within. When you are finally putting all your energy into pursuing your dreams – instead of someone else’s – you are truly fed. I just took one step at a time, and I’m still putting one foot in front of the other today!
What mental barriers did you have to overcome? What fears did you have to confront?
I suppose the fear of failure is a big one. But when you realize that fear is just a belief that you have no control, which is simply untrue, you continue to believe in yourself and move forward. I realized that thoughts become things and if you think positive thoughts, positive things will happen. So why not do that as much as possible? Thoughts are actual measurable units of energy that have a tangible effect on your well-being. The point is you do have control, you always have and always will, and the question is whether people choose to exercise that power.
What kind of feedback or advice were you given and how did you perceive it?
I was told a variety of things from “you’re crazy” to “you’re going to the top!” I take everything with a grain of salt and always remember my truths: I love what I’m doing and I need to do what I’m doing to be whole.
What inspired you to reflect on your former circumstances and begin to define how you wanted to live your life?
I just had a low undertone of being unhappy. I wasn’t getting fed and I slowly awoke to that truth by pushing myself to do new things. I wasn’t always sure what I needed, but I knew
I wasn’t where I was supposed to be and complacency was not an option. So I started listening to those voices that call you to do more.
What are your strength and weaknesses? Which are you trying to improve upon?
My strength is my will and positivity. I will never give up and I believe all things are possible. Weaknesses? What are those? But yes we all need to improve because that is what life is about, learning and growing. Currently I am taking singing, dancing, improv, and boxing lessons. I want to take my performance to the next level and that requires some education and dedication.
How has doing what you are doing changed how you see future possibilities and challenges?
I can see that The Universe is full of infinite possibilities and the “challenges” are necessary to fully achieving your goals because they force you to grow. So I know all I have to do is close my eyes and manifest. If you visualize, it will materialize!
How has your perspective on life changed?
I’ve always believed that all things are possible, but achieving your goals does propel you forward to dream even bigger.
What have you learned about life from your journey?
If you keep trying you will succeed. I have accomplished everything I have set out to do, that I have fully committed to, eventually. The key is to never give up. Many people will try new things but then quit too soon believing they are not capable. In reality they are getting closer with every positive thought. Just one more try, or a thousand more tries, who knows. But if you want it you can have it, that I know for sure.
What is your next dream?
To take my career to the next level, reach a broader audience and truly change people’s lives for the better.
How do you perceive society?
I believe the majority of society is asleep, walking mindlessly through life. We are brainwashed with so many “have to’s” in life that simply aren’t true. I’m thankful I am aware enough, and open enough, to see the matrix.
What is most important to you in life?
Love. Yes it’s a cliché, but for a good reason because it really is what is most important: love of yourself, love of others, love of your gifts. If everyone acted with love the world would grow and heal much faster.
What would be your advice to other people who want to live out their dreams?
Life is happening right NOW so start living it. Don’t listen to the “naysayers,” they only spread negativity because they aren’t strong enough to follow their own dreams. Do what you can, with what you’ve got, from where you are, and you will be successful. Thoughts become things, so see more than what is around you. Oh, and NEVER give up!
What are you most proud of in your life?
I am most proud of the fact that I haven’t settled. I am hungry for life and all its beautiful experiences, so I stay diligent in my pursuit.
